Mayoral Moda Infantil, a Spanish, family-owned children’s fashion firm with over 70 years of history, has been handed the national Industrial Excellence Award 2015 by IESE through its CELSA Chair of Competitiveness in Manufacturing.
Francesc Rubiralta, president and CEO of Grupo CELSA, and IESE Dean Jordi Canals presented the seventh edition of the award to the chairman and CEO of Mayoral, Manuel Domínguez de la Maza.
The jury noted that Mayoral Moda Infantil is now an international business group, a leader in its sector and a representative of Spanish fashion around the world. Its strategic direction for the future involves a changing of the generational guard with tools to ensure sustainability of the family presence in the company. The company has had a permanent upward trend in terms of revenues, results and volumes; its estimated income for 2015 is €300 million.
In the opinion of the jury, this is due to its long-term focus, constant reinvestment of profits, optimization of internally developed information systems and rejection of bank financing. In this context, the company developed a business model that has proven robust in the face of different sources of risk that generally threaten the average competitor.
Also competing with the Málaga-based company this year were Europac Packaging and the multinational Essilor, a leading manufacturer of ophthalmic lenses.
National and European Excellence
The national Industrial Excellence Award is an IESE initiative to publicly acknowledge the work of Spanish industrial companies which, thanks to their operational excellence and management quality, contribute to the country’s economic competitiveness. The seven sets of awards finalists comprise 28 industrial companies that contribute more than two percent of the Spanish GDP.
This award is the prelude to the Industrial Excellence Award at the European level, which has been delivered since 1995 by INSEAD, WHU-Otto Beisheim School of Management, and academic partners IESE Business School, Judge Business School, Rotterdam School of Management, and TU Eindhoven.
Each country winner will compete for the overall European award, which last year was given to the Volkswagen Navarra plant, winner of the award in Spain (read article).
Analyzing The Elements of "Management Quality"
The awards jury analyzes exemplary businesses in France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain and the United Kingdom, but also invites companies from other European countries to participate.
To compare industrial excellence in different sectors and countries, the jury uses a conceptual framework called "management quality" which evaluates the elements involved in obtaining the best results.
It takes into account that a company has a coherent system of establishing direction and strategic alignment, delegating responsibilities, integrating, participating, measuring results, communicating, and developing employees.
The prize at the European level will be handed out during the 12th WirtschaftsWoche Conference in Ludwigsburg (Germany) on September 29-30.
